Pregnancy Due Date & Gestational Age Tracker
Estimate your due date and track your pregnancy week by week using your last menstrual period (LMP), based on Naegele’s Rule.
Not sure of the exact date? An ultrasound dating scan gives a more accurate estimate, especially for irregular cycles.
This tool gives an educational estimate only and is not a substitute for professional medical care. It is not a NAFDAC-regulated diagnostic device. Confirm your due date with an ultrasound scan and a qualified Nigerian healthcare provider at your antenatal clinic. Only about 5% of babies are born exactly on their estimated due date — most arrive between 37 and 42 weeks.

Pregnancy Due Date Calculator: Understanding Your EDD and Gestational Age in Nigeria
Finding out you are pregnant naturally brings one urgent question: when is the baby due? This pregnancy due date calculator gives Nigerian mothers-to-be a quick, private estimate of their expected date of delivery (EDD) and current gestational age, using the same method taught in Nigerian medical schools and applied daily in teaching hospitals and antenatal clinics across the country: Naegele's Rule.
Naegele's Rule, named after the German obstetrician Franz Karl Naegele who described it in the nineteenth century, estimates the due date by adding 280 days, or forty weeks, to the first day of a woman's last menstrual period. In practice, this is usually expressed as LMP plus nine calendar months plus seven days, adjusted for month length and leap years. Because the rule assumes a textbook twenty-eight day cycle with ovulation on day fourteen, a small adjustment is applied when a woman's average cycle is shorter or longer than twenty-eight days: for every day her cycle differs from twenty-eight, her estimated ovulation date, and therefore her due date, shifts by the same number of days. This calculator applies that adjustment automatically once you enter your average cycle length.
It is worth being clear about what an estimated due date actually represents. It is a statistical midpoint, not a prediction of the exact day labour will start. Only around five babies in every hundred are born precisely on their EDD. The remaining ninety-five percent arrive earlier or later, and anywhere from thirty-seven to forty-two completed weeks is considered a normal, full-term range by the World Health Organization and by Nigerian obstetric practice. Babies born before thirty-seven weeks are preterm, while a pregnancy that continues past forty-two weeks is described as post-term and needs closer medical monitoring because the risks to both mother and baby rise beyond that point.
In Nigeria, LMP-based dating with Naegele's Rule is the starting point, but it is deliberately paired with an early ultrasound scan wherever possible. Crown-rump length measurements taken in the first trimester are widely regarded as the most accurate way to date a pregnancy, particularly for women who have irregular cycles, who are unsure of their last period, or who conceived while breastfeeding or shortly after stopping hormonal contraception, all situations where LMP-based estimates can be unreliable. Several Nigerian teaching hospitals have published population-specific ultrasound dating charts to refine these estimates further for local use. For this reason, this tool should be treated as a starting point for planning, not as a replacement for a dating scan carried out by a sonographer or obstetrician.
Gestational age, the other figure this calculator produces, is simply the number of completed weeks and days since the first day of the last menstrual period, counted up to today's date. It is the figure your doctor, midwife, or community health worker will ask for at every antenatal visit, because it determines which screening tests, vaccinations, and milestones are due next. Understanding your own gestational age also helps you follow along with the trimester structure of pregnancy: the first trimester runs from week one to week twelve, the second from week thirteen to week twenty-six, and the third from week twenty-seven onward until birth.
Antenatal care (ANC) in Nigeria is coordinated under guidelines issued by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), which recommend registering for care as early as possible in pregnancy and attending a structured schedule of focused visits through to delivery. These visits are where iron and folic acid supplementation is provided to prevent anaemia, where intermittent preventive treatment for malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) is administered, where tetanus toxoid immunisation is kept up to date, and where danger signs such as severe headache, visual disturbance, heavy vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, or severe abdominal pain are screened for at every encounter. Sleeping under a long-lasting insecticidal net is also a core recommendation, given how significantly malaria in pregnancy can affect both mother and baby in Nigeria's transmission zones.
It is important to be transparent about what this calculator is not. It is an educational, informational tool only. It does not diagnose, does not assess individual medical risk, and is not registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) as a medical device, because it is a general calculator rather than diagnostic software. It cannot account for individual medical history, prior pregnancy complications, or findings from your own scans. Every estimate it produces should be confirmed and adjusted, where necessary, by a qualified Nigerian healthcare provider at your antenatal clinic, ideally supported by an ultrasound scan in early pregnancy.
Used this way, alongside proper antenatal care rather than instead of it, a due date and gestational age calculator is a genuinely useful companion through pregnancy: it helps you plan maternity leave, prepare a delivery bag on schedule, understand what stage of fetal development your baby has reached, and know roughly how many weeks remain until you meet your baby, while your care team handles the clinical decisions that only they are positioned to make safely.
